Specimen of Printing Types
The pattern
This still is filed under Specimen as proof.
Define
A specimen (type, material, finish) is shown so the product proves itself under comparison.
Mechanism
Controlled display. Same conditions, side by side, no adjective required. The sample is the sentence.
Verdict
Buyers choose by eye or by hand and we can put the real thing in front of them.
Why it works
The constant-copy control is the whole mechanism: because the words never change, every difference the eye catches is a difference in the type, which turns a sales catalogue into a controlled comparison. Printing rectos only and repeating each size immediately in italic lets the buyer see the working pair he will actually compose with, not two showings separated by twenty leaves. Ending every showing with capitals, small capitals and figures answers the practical question a printer asks last, which is whether the fount is complete enough to set a whole book.
Steal this when
You are selling variants of one thing - plans, sizes, finishes, models - and the buyer's real question is how they differ. Hold every other variable identical across the showings so the product is the only thing changing, and end each one with the completeness check the buyer would otherwise have to ask for.
