Specimen of Modern Printing Types by Edmund Fry, Letter Founder to the King
The pattern
This still is filed under Specimen as proof.
Define
A specimen (type, material, finish) is shown so the product proves itself under comparison.
Mechanism
Controlled display. Same conditions, side by side, no adjective required. The sample is the sentence.
Verdict
Buyers choose by eye or by hand and we can put the real thing in front of them.
Why it works
Every showing repeats the same fixed passage, the opening of Cicero's first oration against Catiline, so the buyer comparing Great Primer with English is comparing letterforms and how many words fall on a line, never the copy. The frame, the cartouche and the signature at the foot turn each size into a self-contained unit that can be judged alone and reordered by name, which is exactly how a compositor thinks about stock. Scale is used as a sales sequence: the book opens loud with display faces printed sideways at twelve lines pica, then narrows steadily to text sizes, so the reader's attention is bought before the slow part. The priced and numbered ornament pages at the back convert browsing into an order form without a single line of persuasion copy.
Steal this when
Use this when your product range is the argument and copy would only get in the way - a specimen, a materials library, a component set, a template catalogue. Fix one sample piece of content across every variant so the buyer compares the thing and not the demo, then number and price the items at the back so admiration converts to an order.
