Specimen Book and Catalog: A Price List of Printers' Supplies
The pattern
This still is filed under Specimen as proof.
Define
A specimen (type, material, finish) is shown so the product proves itself under comparison.
Mechanism
Controlled display. Same conditions, side by side, no adjective required. The sample is the sentence.
Verdict
Buyers choose by eye or by hand and we can put the real thing in front of them.
Why it works
The opening essay reframes the purchase before a single face is shown, moving the decision from price per pound to wages in the composing room, where Inland's number is large and its competitors have no counter-argument. Then it proves the reframe visually rather than verbally, setting a badly lining line next to the same line on Standard Line so the buyer recognises a defect he has been living with. Printing the font scheme and price beside every showing collapses specifying and ordering into one motion, removing the gap where a purchase decision usually dies. Setting every specimen in selling sentences rather than pangrams keeps the argument running across pages that are nominally just samples.
Steal this when
Use this when you sell a commodity that buyers compare on unit price and your real advantage is total cost of ownership. Lead with the reframe, prove it with a side-by-side the reader can verify with his own eyes in two seconds, then print the terms next to every item so choosing and ordering are the same act.
