Notable Printers of Italy During the Fifteenth Century
The pattern
This still is filed under Specimen as proof.
Define
A specimen (type, material, finish) is shown so the product proves itself under comparison.
Mechanism
Controlled display. Same conditions, side by side, no adjective required. The sample is the sentence.
Verdict
Buyers choose by eye or by hand and we can put the real thing in front of them.
Why it works
The argument is carried by the evidence rather than by the prose. Because each plate shows a whole page at size, the reader compares Hahn against Jenson against Aldus directly, which is a judgement no description could produce, and the caption supplies only what the eye cannot see: who, where, when, what point body. The Hain and Proctor references turn every plate into a checkable citation, which is what converts a connoisseur's picture book into a working reference. The limitation certificate also does quiet work, telling the buyer exactly how scarce his copy is before he reads a word.
Steal this when
Steal this when your case rests on artifacts the audience has never actually seen, and description would only flatten the differences. Reproduce the specimens whole, at size, in sequence, caption them with verifiable sources, and let the comparison make the argument for you.
