Define
A specimen (type, material, finish) is shown so the product proves itself under comparison.
Mechanism
Controlled display. Same conditions, side by side, no adjective required. The sample is the sentence.
Verdict
Buyers choose by eye or by hand and we can put the real thing in front of them.
Why it works
The comparison is built into the form. By reprinting one short text at every size, Bodoni removes content as a variable, so the only thing that can differ from page to page is the type - which is exactly the thing being sold. Setting the city name in roman and the description in italic inside one small block shows both cuts working together in the only place that matters, a real line of copy with real accents and real hyphenation, rather than in an alphabet parade. The near-empty page is itself the argument: the enormous margin reframes the type as an object to be looked at rather than text to be read through, which is the state of mind a specimen has to produce. Sequencing the sizes upward and landing the hundredth and largest on Saluzzo, his own birthplace, puts the maker's signature into the specimen without a word of self-promotion.
Steal this when
Use the fixed-content, one-variable layout whenever someone must judge a single dimension of a product cleanly - a size range, a colour range, a material finish, a density of a service tier. Hold everything else identical across the samples so the only visible difference is the thing being chosen, number each sample so it can be ordered, and put the strongest one last.
