The pattern

This still is filed under Specimen as proof.

Define

A specimen (type, material, finish) is shown so the product proves itself under comparison.

Mechanism

Controlled display. Same conditions, side by side, no adjective required. The sample is the sentence.

Verdict

Buyers choose by eye or by hand and we can put the real thing in front of them.

Why it works

Fournier set the template every foundry catalogue has used since: the unit of display is not the alphabet but the paragraph, because a type is bought for how it behaves in a block, not how its A looks alone. Pairing roman on one page with italic opposite turns the book into a comparison device rather than a list, and the numbering plus the closing index makes a browsing object addressable, so a printer can specify an order without describing anything. The ornamental frame on every page does two jobs at once - it makes a small page look composed, and it is itself a specimen of the vignettes sold later in the book, so the packaging is also merchandise. Choosing La Bruyere and Pascal for the filler flatters the buyer and quietly positions the foundry as part of the literary establishment rather than a metal trade.

Steal this when

Steal this when you are selling something whose value only shows up in use at length - typefaces, materials, editorial tone, a writing or code style. Show it working in a real passage, show the variants opposite each other on the same spread, and number everything so a buyer can order without having to describe what they saw.
