Katalog der Buchkunst-Ausstellung - complete catalogue
The pattern
This still is filed under Specimen as proof.
Define
A specimen (type, material, finish) is shown so the product proves itself under comparison.
Mechanism
Controlled display. Same conditions, side by side, no adjective required. The sample is the sentence.
Verdict
Buyers choose by eye or by hand and we can put the real thing in front of them.
Why it works
The bold catchword inside a running paragraph is the working mechanism: it gives a dense reference text two reading speeds, one for scanning in a gallery with the object in front of you and one for reading at a desk. Bracketed shelfmarks and case numbers make the catalogue a tool rather than a souvenir, and they also function as proof - every assertion is anchored to a retrievable object. The cover argues the exhibition's thesis before a word is read: a facsimile of the oldest German Fraktur, set with enormous air around it, says that the book's beauty is in the letter and the empty field, not in decoration. Ornament appears only where it is quoted from an exhibit, so the catalogue never competes with the works it describes.
Steal this when
Steal this structure for any reference piece people consult while standing in front of the thing it describes - a product catalogue, a spec sheet, an exhibition or venue guide: number the entry, bold the one word someone will scan for, and end every item with a locator. Steal the cover when a piece should feel authoritative and old without any decoration budget: one historically correct typeface, three lines, and a lot of empty paper.
