Government Printing Office Type Book
The pattern
This still is filed under Specimen as proof.
Define
A specimen (type, material, finish) is shown so the product proves itself under comparison.
Mechanism
Controlled display. Same conditions, side by side, no adjective required. The sample is the sentence.
Verdict
Buyers choose by eye or by hand and we can put the real thing in front of them.
Why it works
One fixed control text, the opening of the Declaration of Independence, is set in every face at every size, which removes copy as a variable and makes the comparison genuinely about the type. The right-hand caps count converts the specimen into a copyfitting tool, so the reader is not just choosing a face, he is predicting whether the line will fit before any metal moves. The M and L suffixes and the die counts embed the production constraint inside the aesthetic choice, which kills the usual failure mode where someone specifies a face the plant cannot actually run. The uniform heavy rule grid makes a 104-page inventory scannable, because the eye learns one row shape on page one and reuses it for the rest of the book.
Steal this when
Reach for this when people must choose between many near-identical variants and a pretty gallery would mislead them. Fix the sample content, vary only the one thing under test, and put the fit and feasibility numbers in a fixed column beside each option.
