The pattern

This still is filed under Specimen as proof.

Define

A specimen (type, material, finish) is shown so the product proves itself under comparison.

Mechanism

Controlled display. Same conditions, side by side, no adjective required. The sample is the sentence.

Verdict

Buyers choose by eye or by hand and we can put the real thing in front of them.

Why it works

The book is its own proof. Every border, corner and rule that frames a page is made of the merchandise, so the reader watches the goods perform before he is asked to buy them, and there is nothing left to claim in words. The numbered-row grid turns an unruly inventory into something scannable: one unit per line, repeated enough times to show how it behaves in a run rather than in isolation, with the order number always in the same position on every page. The capitals are shown as meaningless syllables so nothing competes with letterform. With no word to read, the eye has nowhere to go but the thick-to-thin contrast and the flat hairline serifs. The massed-ornament page is the closing argument: it proves one tiny repeated unit can build an image, which is the strongest possible case for buying a great many of them.

Steal this when

Steal the self-demonstrating catalogue whenever the product is a component - a typeface, an icon set, a UI kit, a tile, a material. Build the catalogue itself out of the components, show each unit in isolation with its order code in a fixed position, then spend one full spread proving what happens when they are combined.
