Epreuves des caracteres de la fonderie de J.L. Joannis
The pattern
This still is filed under Specimen as proof.
Define
A specimen (type, material, finish) is shown so the product proves itself under comparison.
Mechanism
Controlled display. Same conditions, side by side, no adjective required. The sample is the sentence.
Verdict
Buyers choose by eye or by hand and we can put the real thing in front of them.
Why it works
The preface turns an unverifiable claim into a checkable one. Instead of saying the type is good, it lists the specific decisions - contrast between thick and thin, cleanness of cut, exactness of alignment, depth of the matrix - and the pages that follow let the buyer test each claim with his own eye. Setting a Latin passage on the verso and its French translation on the recto lets the same face be judged in two languages and two colours of texture on one opening. Admitting that the catalogue is short, and framing that as deliberate - these are the faces used daily, and they are what a new foundry must own first - converts thin inventory from a weakness into evidence of judgment. The offer to cut whatever is missing then makes the gap itself a service.
Steal this when
Steal this when you are the new entrant and your catalogue is visibly smaller than the incumbents' - name the narrowness as a deliberate choice, publish the standards you held yourself to instead of adjectives, and turn every gap into an invitation to commission. Also steal the paired-translation layout whenever you need the same thing judged under two different conditions on one spread.
