Desk Book of Type Specimens, Borders, Ornaments, Brass Rules and Cuts, Vol. 1
The pattern
This still is filed under Specimen as proof.
Define
A specimen (type, material, finish) is shown so the product proves itself under comparison.
Mechanism
Controlled display. Same conditions, side by side, no adjective required. The sample is the sentence.
Verdict
Buyers choose by eye or by hand and we can put the real thing in front of them.
Why it works
Renaming the specimen book a desk book changes the frame from catalogue to reference tool, which buys it permanent shelf position next to the work and turns a one-time browse into repeated exposure. Setting body faces as a long familiar passage rather than a slogan lets the buyer judge colour, fit and line economy at reading length, which is the actual decision for text type. On display pages the copy speaks in the first person about the face itself, so the demonstration and the sales argument occupy the same letters. Cross references by page number between related series keep the reader moving inside the book instead of closing it.
Steal this when
Use this when you want a sales catalogue to survive past the first read: position it as the reference the buyer works from daily, demonstrate at the length the real decision requires rather than at teaser length, and cross link entries so the book keeps the reader inside it.
