Why it works
The book practises the argument it is making: it strips itself of applied ornament, uses two red rules and one well-cut roman to do all the structural work, and then lets the plates carry the evidence. Poppenberg leads with a scene rather than a thesis - you are walked through the Plantin house in Antwerp, smelling old book culture, before a single principle is stated - which buys attention for an essentially technical argument. The critical judgements are short and physical (a pressed board cover imitating leather is called a bad omen), so an abstract standard becomes a test you can apply by eye. Facsimile plates work as demonstration proof: the reader is not told that type and image can speak one language, they are shown a page where they do.
Steal this when
Steal this when you are arguing for a standard of craft and your own artefact can obey that standard in front of the reader - let the object be the first proof and the examples be the second. Also steal the opening move when a technical subject needs warmth: enter through one concrete place or workshop before you state the principle.
