This still is filed under Specimen as proof.

Define

A specimen (type, material, finish) is shown so the product proves itself under comparison.

Mechanism

Controlled display. Same conditions, side by side, no adjective required. The sample is the sentence.

Verdict

Buyers choose by eye or by hand and we can put the real thing in front of them.

Why it works

Numbering three rival cuttings of the same size on one page turns a catalogue into a decision tool, since the user is not asked to remember a face from twenty leaves back. Holding the specimen passage constant across every size and cut makes the type the only variable, so difference reads as quality rather than as content. Attribution lines do quiet credentialling work: naming Baskerville as the caster and Junius as the donor imports two reputations into an inventory that otherwise makes no claims at all. The antiquarian and oriental section is positioning, not selling, and signals that Oxford is the press for work no commercial house can set.

Steal this when

Reach for this when you are presenting several close variants of one thing to an expert who has to choose between them: hold every other variable fixed, put the options on the same spread, and number them so they can be named in a decision. The donor and maker credit lines are worth copying whenever provenance is the thing that separates you from a cheaper supplier.
