The pattern

This still is filed under Specimen as proof.

Define

A specimen (type, material, finish) is shown so the product proves itself under comparison.

Mechanism

Controlled display. Same conditions, side by side, no adjective required. The sample is the sentence.

Verdict

Buyers choose by eye or by hand and we can put the real thing in front of them.

Why it works

The pitch and the proof are the same object, and the title page front-loads the whole commercial claim in two lines before a single fount is shown. Running one continuous Latin passage from Cicero down through every size turns the book into a controlled test: the words are fixed, so the only variable a buyer perceives is the metal. Naming Caslon, Wilson and Baine on the labels is borrowed authority placed exactly where the eye already is. The flowers are given roughly a third of the book because ornamental capacity is what separates a jobbing printer from a book printer, and a stack of bands proves range in a way a sentence cannot.

Steal this when

Reach for this when you sell a capability rather than a finished thing and the buyer's real fear is that you only do the easy half of the job. Show the plain work and the fancy work in one document, hold every other variable constant across the samples, and name the components or suppliers on each sample so the credibility arrives at the point of inspection.
