Why it works
Holding the text constant is the mechanism. Because every size, every cut and every italick sets the same opening of Cicero's first Catiline oration, the buyer cannot be distracted by content and is forced to read colour, fit, and how many words fall to the line. Numbering variants within one body, No 1, No 2, No 3, turns the book into a controlled test rather than a display. Printing rectos only means the grey a reader judges is the type's own grey, not show-through from the back of the sheet, which matters because the whole purchase decision is a judgement about texture on the page. The classical passage is itself a positioning move, aimed at the trade that prints Latin.
Steal this when
Use the fixed-control-text structure whenever someone must choose between variants of the same thing and any difference in content would contaminate the judgement - typefaces, print or material samples, before-and-after renders, model outputs. Keep the sample copy identical, change exactly one variable per showing, and label the variable.
