A Printed Specimen of Caslon Old Style Type, with Appropriate Ornaments
The pattern
This still is filed under Specimen as proof.
Define
A specimen (type, material, finish) is shown so the product proves itself under comparison.
Mechanism
Controlled display. Same conditions, side by side, no adjective required. The sample is the sentence.
Verdict
Buyers choose by eye or by hand and we can put the real thing in front of them.
Why it works
The specimen copy is the selling copy. Instead of dummy text the showings carry one continuous narrative about Caslon's origin, so a sentence begins in 18 point and finishes in 24, and the reader keeps going for the story while unknowingly reading every size. That solves the specimen book's real problem, which is that nobody reads samples. The origin story itself does the differentiation work: the face is available to every competitor, so the shop sells provenance and connoisseurship around it, positioning itself as the printer who knows why the letter matters. Two-colour rule frames and foliate borders demonstrate the press work and register at the same time, and the numbered limitation turns a trade circular into a keepsake that stays on a desk instead of going into a bin.
Steal this when
Steal this when you sell something your competitors sell too and the product cannot carry the difference - then the difference has to be the story attached to it and the care visible in how you present it. Also steal the running-narrative sample: whenever you must show many variants, make the sample content one continuous piece so people read through the whole range instead of glancing at the first one.
