Roycroft Catalog 1909
The pattern
This still is filed under Price-anchoring offer.
Define
A higher reference number is shown first so the real price reads as a concession, not as a starting bid.
Mechanism
People judge a price against the first number they see. The anchor must be a real comparison or it collapses.
Verdict
We have a credible reference the buyer will accept
Why it works
The catalog sells the maker, not the merchandise. Every entry is a short piece of voice-forward comic writing that gives the buyer a reason to like Hubbard before it gives him a price, so the price ladder reads as a choice of how much of the shop you want rather than as a cost. The orange aphorism at the foot of each page is a deliberate non-sequitur that rewards page-turning and trains the reader to read the catalog as a magazine. Listing seven bindings of the same title is a pure anchoring device: the boards edition looks modest beside a hundred-dollar full Levant, and the top of the ladder certifies the bottom.
Steal this when
You sell one thing at several tiers and want the cheap tier to feel like a choice rather than a compromise. Also when a founder's voice is the actual differentiator, and product descriptions should carry the personality instead of a separate About page.
