The pattern

This still is filed under Mail-order catalog.

Define

A catalog that is the store: browse, choose, order, without a clerk and often without a website.

Mechanism

Assortment as argument. Density, numbering, and an order path do the closing. The book is the funnel.

Verdict

We have a range, remote buyers, and a way to take the order on the same object.

Read the pattern

Why it works

Holding the entire book fixed between printings is the technique worth noticing: the monogram, the cover drawing, the page module, the copy and every price stay put, so nothing in the buyer's picture of Larkin has to be relearned twice a year. The only things allowed to move are the two proofs of growth, a bigger factory in the plate and more branch cities on the back cover, which convert the reissue itself into evidence that the argument is working. Because prices are untouched, the front-page arithmetic keeps its authority instead of reading as a promotion that comes and goes.

Steal this when

Reach for this when you reissue a catalogue, price list or range card on a cycle and are tempted to redesign it. Freeze the shell and let only the proof points advance, so each edition compounds recognition rather than resetting it.
