Hand-book of Modern Business Correspondence
The pattern
This still is filed under Direct-from-the-founder letter.
Define
A letter in one person's voice, written as if to one reader, signed by the person who owns the outcome.
Mechanism
Personal authority. The signature is the proof. The tone is the brand. A committee cannot write this and keep the mechanism.
Verdict
Trust sits on a person
Why it works
The ellipsis run is the whole trick: a model letter printed with blanks where the product, date and quantity belong is a reusable template rather than an example, so the clerk fills instead of writing. Letters are printed as numbered series, not single specimens, which teaches follow-up as a campaign with escalating pressure rather than one shot. The selling-letter chapter segments a single offer by job title, writing a different argument for the General Manager, the Chief Engineer, the Supervisor of Bridges and Buildings and the Engineer of Maintenance of Way, which is account-based messaging a century early.
Steal this when
Use this when a team, not a writer, has to send consistent mail. Publish numbered template series with the variables marked and one series per buying role, so the sender is choosing a letter rather than composing one.
