Craft-argument book

The Life of P. T. Barnum, Written by Himself

archive.orgpublic-domain-us

The pattern

This still is filed under Craft-argument book.

Define

A book or manual that sells a method by arguing it. Chapters as proof, not as decoration around a product.

Mechanism

Authority by treatise. The reader who accepts the argument has already accepted the seller as teacher.

Verdict

We can teach a craft in public and the teaching is the funnel.

Why it works

Barnum runs a pre-emptive confession. The preface names the exact charges his enemies would bring, the Joice Heth exhibition, the Fejee Mermaid, the Woolly Horse, and then sells them back as entertainment, which removes the ammunition and converts an attack into content he controls. Every chapter is built as a dramatised transaction with named parties, dialogue and a dollar figure at the end, so the reader is learning a method while thinking they are being amused. The episodic running heads let the book be opened anywhere and still pay off in half a page, which is what keeps a 400-page memoir being picked back up. And the whole volume is dated from the American Museum and dedicated to the audience it wants in the door, so the book functions as a permanent, purchasable advertisement for a paid attraction.

Steal this when

Steal this when the market already has a story about you, especially an unflattering one, and denying it has stopped working. Tell it first, in more detail than your critics have, with the mechanics shown and a paying attraction named at the end of every anecdote.
