The History and Development of Advertising
The pattern
This still is filed under Craft-argument book.
Define
A book or manual that sells a method by arguing it. Chapters as proof, not as decoration around a product.
Mechanism
Authority by treatise. The reader who accepts the argument has already accepted the seller as teacher.
Verdict
We can teach a craft in public and the teaching is the funnel.
Why it works
The whole book is built on evidence by artifact rather than assertion: almost no claim about advertising is made in the abstract, each one is pinned to a reproduced piece the reader can inspect. The running heads are written as headlines, not chapter labels, so 762 pages can be flipped and skimmed like a magazine and every spread sells the next one. Chronological ordering does the argumentative work silently, because a thing with a 4,000-year lineage reads as an institution and not a fad, which is the status claim the book is actually making. Reproducing a 1824 runaway-apprentice ad for a man who became President converts dry archive into a story the reader repeats.
Steal this when
You need to legitimise a discipline, category or method to people who think it is new, shallow or slightly disreputable. Build the case chronologically out of primary artifacts the reader can inspect, and let the lineage carry the status argument instead of arguing for it.
