The Clothing Book
The pattern
This still is filed under Craft-argument book.
Define
A book or manual that sells a method by arguing it. Chapters as proof, not as decoration around a product.
Mechanism
Authority by treatise. The reader who accepts the argument has already accepted the seller as teacher.
Verdict
We can teach a craft in public and the teaching is the funnel.
Why it works
The signature device is the run-on headline: Your Clothing is the display type and is the first thing that another person sees is the body copy, so the headline is the grammatical subject of the first sentence and the eye cannot stop at it. Each ad holds one idea and one reason, stated conversationally and short, which is what makes small-space retail advertising survive daily repetition. Numbering every ad and every cut turns a 500-page book into an order catalogue a busy retailer can work from by reference rather than by reading. Binding the sales-versus-advertising ledger into the back is the commercial move that keeps the book on the desk all year, because it makes the retailer's own record the argument for buying more.
Steal this when
Steal the run-on headline whenever the piece is small, frequent and has to be read in a crowded page -- it removes the gap between the attention device and the argument. Steal the whole structure when you are building a swipe or template library for a team: instruction first, numbered finished assets second, a measurement sheet last, so the user can find, use and justify a piece without rereading the theory.
