The Buckeye Book of Direct Advertising

The pattern

This still is filed under Craft-argument book.

Define

A book or manual that sells a method by arguing it. Chapters as proof, not as decoration around a product.

Mechanism

Authority by treatise. The reader who accepts the argument has already accepted the seller as teacher.

Verdict

We can teach a craft in public and the teaching is the funnel.

Read the pattern

Why it works

The book is a sampling device disguised as a reference work. Because the product is paper, every page the reader turns is a live demonstration of the thing being sold, which is why the text can say flatly that a paper advertisement is an advertisement, a sample and a demonstration combined. The second mechanism is permanence: Beckett argues explicitly that a book stays on a desk for a decade while an ad goes in the dust bin overnight, and proves it with an enquiry form that came back twelve years after mailing. The third is disarming candour, admitting in the foreword that it hopes to create good-will for its products, which buys credibility for the three hundred pages of genuinely non-promotional technique that follow.

Steal this when

Use this structure when your product is the medium your buyer already works in, so the artefact can demonstrate itself while it teaches. It is also the right model when the buying cycle is long and you want one piece to keep working for years rather than for one campaign season.
