The Advertising Book, 1916
The pattern
This still is filed under Craft-argument book.
Define
A book or manual that sells a method by arguing it. Chapters as proof, not as decoration around a product.
Mechanism
Authority by treatise. The reader who accepts the argument has already accepted the seller as teacher.
Verdict
We can teach a craft in public and the teaching is the funnel.
Why it works
The book defends a contested industry by refusing to argue for it. The preface concedes that attacks are inevitable and then answers with nothing but a documented record, which removes the defensive posture that would have invited more attack. Inside, almost every claim is in the voice of the man who ran the campaign, quoted at length, so the compiler never has to assert anything and the reader convicts himself from primary testimony. The sideheads, schedules and leader tables make a 622-page book usable as a lookup tool, which is what keeps a reference book in circulation rather than on a shelf.
Steal this when
Copy this when your category is under attack and defending it directly would only sound defensive: publish the receipts in the operators' own words and let the sheer count of specific cases do the work. The quoted-practitioner structure also suits any category report where your own opinion carries less weight than your customers' does.
