The pattern

This still is filed under Craft-argument book.

Define

A book or manual that sells a method by arguing it. Chapters as proof, not as decoration around a product.

Mechanism

Authority by treatise. The reader who accepts the argument has already accepted the seller as teacher.

Verdict

We can teach a craft in public and the teaching is the funnel.

Why it works

The teaching mechanism is contrast between figures. The same advertisement is shown in its cluttered form and its simplified form, so an abstract idea about unity becomes something the eye settles rather than something the reader has to take on faith. The colour section uses the same trick on process printing: showing the yellow plate alone makes the build of a colour image visible instead of described. Every chapter closes with QUESTIONS, then PROBLEMS, then COLLATERAL READINGS, a ladder that moves the student from recall to judgement to creation, and the problems are stated as selling difficulties rather than exercises. Bold sideheads let the book be read as a reference after it has been read as a course.

Steal this when

You are teaching a judgement skill rather than a fact set, such as reviewing creative or training a team on layout. Show the weak version and the strong version of the same piece side by side, then close with a problem that forces the learner to produce something instead of recognising something.
