Principles of the Mail Order Business
The pattern
This still is filed under Craft-argument book.
Define
A book or manual that sells a method by arguing it. Chapters as proof, not as decoration around a product.
Mechanism
Authority by treatise. The reader who accepts the argument has already accepted the seller as teacher.
Verdict
We can teach a craft in public and the teaching is the funnel.
Why it works
The book teaches by exhibit rather than by rule. Every principle is followed by a facsimile of a real advertisement and a one-paragraph post mortem naming the job that ad was built to do, usually to bring inquiries rather than orders, which trains the reader to read an ad as a mechanism instead of judging it as decoration. Printing the ads at running size in a two-column setting that mimics the mail order papers lets the reader study layout, not just copy. The author's own agency solicitation sits in the preface and again in the back matter, so the dollar manual functions as a lead magnet for a far larger service sale, and the annotated ads double as his portfolio.
Steal this when
Steal this when you want to sell a service by teaching the craft: build a cheap manual out of your own annotated real work with the result attached to each piece, and put the service offer in the preface and the back pages rather than the middle. Also steal the annotation pattern whenever you need to teach a team to judge creative, show the piece, state the job it was designed to do, and only then say whether it worked.
