Powell's Practical Advertiser
The pattern
This still is filed under Craft-argument book.
Define
A book or manual that sells a method by arguing it. Chapters as proof, not as decoration around a product.
Mechanism
Authority by treatise. The reader who accepts the argument has already accepted the seller as teacher.
Verdict
We can teach a craft in public and the teaching is the funnel.
Why it works
The subhead deck under each boxed department head is a contents-in-miniature: the reader sees the whole argument of the chapter before reading a line, the same device long-copy ads use with crossheads. The numbered specimen system turns the book into a lookup device - body text says see Specimen No. 62 and the reader flips to a real ad rather than an abstraction, so the instruction and the evidence are the same object. The opening statistic that sixty to seventy per cent of advertising is wasted is a fear lead that installs the author as the only guide out, problem-agitate-solution applied to a textbook.
Steal this when
Use this shape when selling expertise to people who believe they already know the job. Open on the size of the money they are wasting, then prove it with a wall of their peers' real work, annotated, instead of with your opinions.
