The pattern

This still is filed under Craft-argument book.

Define

A book or manual that sells a method by arguing it. Chapters as proof, not as decoration around a product.

Mechanism

Authority by treatise. The reader who accepts the argument has already accepted the seller as teacher.

Verdict

We can teach a craft in public and the teaching is the funnel.

Why it works

Larned inverts the usual textbook ratio: the plates are the argument and the prose is the caption, so the reader learns by comparing real advertisements rather than by absorbing theory. Positional captions (Left, Upper Right) force a direct visual comparison between a weak and a strong treatment of the same problem, which teaches judgment faster than a rule would. Grouping several ads from one campaign on a single page demonstrates continuity as a mechanism you can see - the Auto-Lite slippered foot, the Underwood shadow of the pen - instead of asserting that consistency matters. Each chapter isolates exactly one variable, which makes the book usable as a diagnostic index when a specific layout is failing.

Steal this when

Reach for this structure when you need to teach visual judgment or set a house standard: one chapter per single variable, several real examples per spread, and a caption that names the one decision being demonstrated. It is also the model for a swipe-file teardown deck where side-by-side comparison, not commentary, has to carry the lesson.
