Define
A book or manual that sells a method by arguing it. Chapters as proof, not as decoration around a product.
Mechanism
Authority by treatise. The reader who accepts the argument has already accepted the seller as teacher.
Verdict
We can teach a craft in public and the teaching is the funnel.
Why it works
The book is built as a comparison machine. By printing the flawed chart and the corrected chart from identical data within one page-turn, it teaches by discrimination rather than by rule, which is why a reader remembers it. The three-level caption system - number, descriptive title, criticism - lets the whole book be read at speed as illustrations and captions only, which the preface explicitly designs for and times at about an hour; the running text becomes optional depth rather than the load-bearing element. Criticising real published charts from named organisations converts abstract advice into named stakes and gives every rule a visible victim. And the flat black-only printing is itself the argument: line weight, spacing and labelling are shown to do all the work that colour is usually asked to do.
Steal this when
Steal the paired wrong-way / right-way spread whenever you are teaching a craft judgement that cannot be stated as a rule - design, writing, pricing pages - because the reader learns the difference faster than the principle. Steal the three-level caption when a document has to survive being skimmed: give every figure a number, a plain-English title of what it shows, and a short criticism line of why it is built that way, so the skim path alone carries the argument.
