Craft-argument book

The pattern

This still is filed under Craft-argument book.

Define

A book or manual that sells a method by arguing it. Chapters as proof, not as decoration around a product.

Mechanism

Authority by treatise. The reader who accepts the argument has already accepted the seller as teacher.

Verdict

We can teach a craft in public and the teaching is the funnel.

Why it works

The document is a donor report doing two jobs at once: it settles accounts and it recruits. Every gift is converted into agate lines, circulation and dollars, so an intangible favour becomes a number a board can read, and the numbers are stacked into schedules rather than claimed in prose. Then the roll of honour runs for dozens of pages naming every publisher, agency, artist and printer, which makes the donation public and makes next year's donation socially compulsory. The blank contributed-space box printed into each ad is the sharpest device: the sponsor's name appears inside the government's own creative, so the advertiser buys visible virtue rather than anonymous charity. Mounting the Executive Order and the Presidential signature at the front borrows state authority to certify the whole industry.

Steal this when

Steal this when you need a sponsor, partner or volunteer base to keep giving and the gift has no invoice attached. Cost the donation in the donor's own currency, publish a complete named roll, and leave a visible byline slot inside the work itself so contributing is a public act rather than a private cheque.
