The pattern

This still is filed under Craft-argument book.

Define

A book or manual that sells a method by arguing it. Chapters as proof, not as decoration around a product.

Mechanism

Authority by treatise. The reader who accepts the argument has already accepted the seller as teacher.

Verdict

We can teach a craft in public and the teaching is the funnel.

Read the pattern

Why it works

Point of contact reframes attention as a matching problem rather than a volume problem, which is why the book attacks manufacturer's copy directly instead of merely calling it boring. The deadly parallel, two columns headed Faulty and Better, teaches by contrast: the reader sees the fix before reading the rule, so the rule sticks. Classifying evidence into named types turns reason-why from a style into a checklist a copy chief can hold a draft against. And the dedication to the anonymous copy-writer installs the self-effacement doctrine the rest of the book enforces, that the test of copy is the impression on the reader, not the visibility of the writer.

Steal this when

You are auditing copy that talks about the company, its factory, its heritage or its standards instead of the reader's existing interest, and you need a name for what is wrong and a rewrite method. Also when building a copy training standard or review rubric for a team, where the Faulty-Better pairing beats any list of rules.
