The pattern

This still is filed under Craft-argument book.

Define

A book or manual that sells a method by arguing it. Chapters as proof, not as decoration around a product.

Mechanism

Authority by treatise. The reader who accepts the argument has already accepted the seller as teacher.

Verdict

We can teach a craft in public and the teaching is the funnel.

Read the pattern

Why it works

The book teaches by being the thing it teaches. The type chapter sets every specimen paragraph in the face it is describing, so the reader learns the difference between Old Style and Modern by reading the difference rather than being told it, and the samples section prints working advertisements with the compositional reasoning footnoted underneath - a swipe file with its logic attached. Structurally it indexes by the reader's trade rather than by the author's framework, so a florist or a coal dealer finds himself in two minutes and gets an instruction specific enough to act on this week. Fowler's persuasion runs on inversion: he first attacks the bargain and less-than-cost clichés his readers are already using, on the ground that the public scents a printed lie, then substitutes a concrete replacement rule - understate the value of the goods and let the surprise do the selling.

Steal this when

You are writing a how-to for practitioners who will only ever read the paragraph about themselves: index by their trade, not your framework, and give each one a number, a space size and a cadence rather than a principle. Also the right model when a manual has to double as a portfolio, by reproducing your own work with the reasoning under it.
