die neue linie, September 1929 - cover
The pattern
This still is filed under Typographic cover frame.
Define
A stable type frame (masthead, rules, folio) that stays put so the image inside can change every issue.
Mechanism
Fixed architecture. Recognition lives in the frame. News lives in the picture. The two jobs stay separate.
Verdict
We publish on a fixed schedule and need instant recognition plus a new image every time.
Why it works
The cover sells a magazine about modern life by building a scene out of architecture rather than out of fashion drawing, so the window grid, the plate glass and the interior floor do the positioning work. Showing the figure from behind turns her into a stand-in for the reader, so you look where she looks instead of looking at her, which is a far stickier invitation than a face. One flat colour panel absorbs every piece of administrative type, keeping the photographic field clean and giving the masthead a place to end. Lower-case geometric sans was the visual signature of the new typography and on a newsstand it separated the title instantly from hand-lettered competitors.
Steal this when
Use when a first issue or a relaunch has to state what the publication is before anyone reads a line. Lock a masthead, one flat colour panel that carries all administrative type, and a photographic field, then change only the photograph each issue.
