Define
A stable type frame (masthead, rules, folio) that stays put so the image inside can change every issue.
Mechanism
Fixed architecture. Recognition lives in the frame. News lives in the picture. The two jobs stay separate.
Verdict
We publish on a fixed schedule and need instant recognition plus a new image every time.
Why it works
Seen together the system is visible: the constants are the grotesque capital, the series word in small letterspaced caps, the volume number as an oversized figure pinned to the bottom left corner, and exactly one accent that is allowed to be colour. Everything else is free, which is why the two covers look like siblings and not like one layout refilled twice. The oversized numeral is doing shelf work - it is the element you read from three metres away when the books stand in a row. Dropping the initial capital a size larger than the rest of its word, as with the G of GESTALTUNG, lets a long German title fill the measure without breaking into an awkward line.
Steal this when
Use this when designing a series - reports, a book list, a set of guides - and the volumes must be recognisable as a family without every cover being the same layout. Fix three or four constants, hand the rest of the page to the individual title.
