The modern terminal, the gate of the city. October, scribner's magazine - poster
The pattern
This still is filed under Typographic cover frame.
Define
A stable type frame (masthead, rules, folio) that stays put so the image inside can change every issue.
Mechanism
Fixed architecture. Recognition lives in the frame. News lives in the picture. The two jobs stay separate.
Verdict
We publish on a fixed schedule and need instant recognition plus a new image every time.
Why it works
This is the show-the-product variant of the series: rather than a new illustration, the poster reproduces the cover the buyer will look for on the rack, so recognition at the point of sale is guaranteed. Lifting the title line out above the inset and setting it larger than anything on the cover means the poster still delivers an idea at distance while the inset does the identification work close up. The contents list is typographically restless on purpose - alternating weight, case and italic with rules between - which makes six separate names scan as six separate reasons rather than as a paragraph. The single perspective of a vaulted interior receding to a bright opening is doing the emotional work that the words gate of the city only label.
Steal this when
When the thing you are promoting has its own cover, packaging or interface that the buyer must recognise in a crowded display - put the artefact in the ad and let the headline sit outside it.
