Define
A stable type frame (masthead, rules, folio) that stays put so the image inside can change every issue.
Mechanism
Fixed architecture. Recognition lives in the frame. News lives in the picture. The two jobs stay separate.
Verdict
We publish on a fixed schedule and need instant recognition plus a new image every time.
Why it works
The constraint is the idea: Lissitzky built every image from material already in the compositor's case, so the book could be printed on ordinary presses in ordinary shops and still look like nothing else. The thumb index turns a poetry book into a tool - a performer can open it at the right poem one-handed while standing - and because each tab carries a symbol rather than a title, the mark on the tab and the image on the page teach each other. Holding to two inks across the whole book makes red read as emphasis everywhere, so a single red disc can carry a poem. Seen as a grid like this, the discipline is the lesson: sixteen wildly different compositions, one material vocabulary.
Steal this when
Steal the thumb index whenever a document will be jumped into rather than read straight through - a playbook, a price list, a field guide - and give each tab a mark, not a word. Steal the constraint when a production budget is tight: fix a two-colour palette and a small kit of shapes, then make every page different only in arrangement.
