Bauhausbucher 7: Neue Arbeiten der Bauhauswerkstatten - title page
The pattern
This still is filed under Typographic cover frame.
Define
A stable type frame (masthead, rules, folio) that stays put so the image inside can change every issue.
Mechanism
Fixed architecture. Recognition lives in the frame. News lives in the picture. The two jobs stay separate.
Verdict
We publish on a fixed schedule and need instant recognition plus a new image every time.
Why it works
The cover is assembled from three flat rectangles rather than ornament, so series identity is carried by proportion and colour position instead of a logo. Making the volume number the largest element on the page turns a catalogue detail into the recognition device: on a shelf you read the number before you read the title. The asymmetric cross of black bands leaves one large empty quadrant, and that unprinted paper is what gives the small caps their weight. A single grotesque in one weight does all the ranking through scale and reversal, so nothing competes for voice.
Steal this when
Use this when you are launching a numbered series and every instalment must be recognisable at a distance while sharing one template. Only the number, the title band and one colour need to change between issues.
