The pattern

This still is filed under Specimen as proof.

Define

A specimen (type, material, finish) is shown so the product proves itself under comparison.

Mechanism

Controlled display. Same conditions, side by side, no adjective required. The sample is the sentence.

Verdict

Buyers choose by eye or by hand and we can put the real thing in front of them.

Why it works

Same self-demonstration as the earlier Cooper sheet, but pushed to the one property that sells a black weight, sheer mass, so the headline is simultaneously the product, the proof and the demonstration of what it does to a page. Stacking the new face directly above the existing series turns the sheet into a side-by-side comparison, which is how a line extension gets bought: the printer sees what he already owns and what he is missing in one glance. Printing the rule catalogue numbers in the margins quietly converts decoration into merchandise, every border on the sheet becomes an orderable item. The trademark and the city list are trust furniture, doing in two small marks what a paragraph of copy would do badly.

Steal this when

Use this when you are launching a line extension of something customers already own, and the new item's single advantage can be shown rather than described. Put the new and the existing item on the same page at the same moment so the gap between them does the selling.
