Why it works
The die-cut is the whole argument. By withholding the name and framing one character in a porthole, the cover forces the buyer to do the identifying, and a face that survives that test has proved it is distinctive at a glance, which is exactly what display type is bought for. The industrial surface positions the face as machine-age product rather than literary craft, so the object argues for the typeface's modernity before a word is read. Placing the window off-centre and low breaks the symmetry a specimen would normally have, which makes an otherwise empty rectangle read as designed rather than blank.
Steal this when
Use this when the thing you are launching is defined by radical reduction and you can afford to show almost nothing. Cut a window, frame the one element that carries the whole idea, and let the absence of everything else be the claim.
