Behrens Mediaval type specimen
The pattern
This still is filed under Specimen as proof.
Define
A specimen (type, material, finish) is shown so the product proves itself under comparison.
Mechanism
Controlled display. Same conditions, side by side, no adjective required. The sample is the sentence.
Verdict
Buyers choose by eye or by hand and we can put the real thing in front of them.
Why it works
The positioning is carried by one word in the title: naming it als Buchschrift tells a printer which shelf the face belongs on before the book is opened, and heads off the objection that a designer known for display and architecture cannot draw a reading type. The cover argues by restraint, it is set small and evenly rather than at showing-off size, so the sample the buyer sees is the sample that matters, text colour on a page. The tight spiral border and the single green hairline supply enough incident to stop the cream field reading as funereal, and the griffin device gives the sheet a mark to be recognised by without adding a second voice.
Steal this when
Use this when you are extending a trusted name into a use case that name is not yet trusted for. Name the use case in the title and then behave like that use case throughout the piece, rather than showing off the qualities the name is already known for.
