Mechanism
Occasion-making. The date plus the shelf becomes a reason to look now. The cover is a calendar, not a product shot.

Why it works
The placard is the layout's whole trick: it creates a clean white type panel inside a busy illustration without any box rule or tint block, and the hands holding it make the information feel offered rather than printed. The season and year are given the last and most isolated line because a mail-order catalogue's cover job is to tell you which edition you are holding and whether it is current. Pattern does all the styling work, so a two-ink job still communicates fashion authority, which is the product being sold.
