Whose Fault When Children Disobey?" (Child Life, June 1923)
The pattern
This still is filed under Question headline.
Define
The first line is a question the reader was already asking, or one they cannot leave unanswered.
Mechanism
Open loop plus recognition. A good question is the reader's objection, spoken first by us.
Verdict
We know the real objection and can answer it in the next breath.
Why it works
The headline is an accusation that never lands on the reader, because the question stays open and a caring parent will answer it about themselves. The body runs an analogy that reframes the whole category: maids, cooks, clerks and stenographers are expected to have training, but the biggest job of all is tackled with no training whatever, which converts a moral failing into a skills gap that can be bought. The DO YOU KNOW HOW box is the real engine, a long list of specific, embarrassing gaps, so the reader fails a test she never agreed to take and reaches the coupon already convinced. The ask is deliberately shrunk to a minute and a postage stamp, and the price of the course is never mentioned on the page.
Steal this when
You sell training or a system into a field where buyers believe instinct is enough. Reframe the job as a profession with standards, then put a long checklist of specific competences on the page so the prospect disqualifies himself and asks for the free explainer.
