Price-anchoring offer

Victor bicycles, Overman Wheel Co - poster

The pattern

This still is filed under Price-anchoring offer.

Define

A higher reference number is shown first so the real price reads as a concession, not as a starting bid.

Mechanism

People judge a price against the first number they see. The anchor must be a real comparison or it collapses.

Verdict

We have a credible reference the buyer will accept

Read the pattern

Why it works

The claim is a price-objection pre-empt written as a boast, so the reader converts expense into evidence before he has been quoted a figure. Reversing the picture to a near-solid black field lets the riders' faces read as bright shapes and makes a one-colour job look like an expensive one, which supports the same claim visually. The type hierarchy is brutally simple, product name huge, claim small beside it, manufacturer and cities in decreasing weight, so a passer-by takes one line and a buyer takes four.

Steal this when

Use this when you are the expensive option and cannot or will not discount. State your higher cost as the reason to buy, keep it to one short line beside the product name, and let the production quality of the piece itself back the claim.
