Scribner's for April (1899) - poster
The pattern
This still is filed under Price-anchoring offer.
Define
A higher reference number is shown first so the real price reads as a concession, not as a starting bid.
Mechanism
People judge a price against the first number they see. The anchor must be a real comparison or it collapses.
Verdict
We have a credible reference the buyer will accept
Why it works
The poster shows the buyer the actual cover, so the promise and the object on the counter match and nothing has to be described. Doubling NOW READY and PRICE 25 Cts. symmetrically on both sides of the centrepiece means the availability and the price are unmissable from either side of a stand, and the repetition reads as ornament rather than as nagging. In the contents block the titles are red and the bylines black, which lets a reader skim only red until one title catches, then drop into black for the name. Roosevelt's Rough Riders is placed at the top of the right column, the strongest name in the strongest scan position.
Steal this when
Use this for a periodical, issue or release where the buyer must recognise a physical object on a shelf. Show the actual cover at the centre, flank it with availability and price, and set the line-up in two colour-coded columns so titles and bylines can be skimmed separately.
