Price-anchoring offer

Now ready in the New York ledger, Maubikeck, the lion-tamer - poster

The pattern

This still is filed under Price-anchoring offer.

Define

A higher reference number is shown first so the real price reads as a concession, not as a starting bid.

Mechanism

People judge a price against the first number they see. The anchor must be a real comparison or it collapses.

Verdict

We have a credible reference the buyer will accept

Read the pattern

Why it works

Every element of a complete retail transaction is on one card and in a fixed reading order: news line, title, author, price, and where to buy. NOW READY converts a publication into an event with a deadline attached, and FOR SALE HERE turns the card from an advertisement into a point-of-sale instruction pinned to the exact counter the reader is standing at. The outlined crowd of hats at the bottom right is a social-proof device drawn rather than claimed - the reader is shown other people already watching the act.

Steal this when

Steal this whenever the ad sits within arm's reach of the thing being sold: lead with the news that it is available now, name the price in figures large enough to read across the shop, and end with the location cue. It is the right structure for episodic or serialised content where each new instalment is itself the reason to buy.
