Price-anchoring offer

I Know What I Want for Christmas - an Ingersoll Dollar Watch" (Everybody's Magazine, Dec 1903)

The pattern

This still is filed under Price-anchoring offer.

Define

A higher reference number is shown first so the real price reads as a concession, not as a starting bid.

Mechanism

People judge a price against the first number they see. The anchor must be a real comparison or it collapses.

Verdict

We have a credible reference the buyer will accept

Read the pattern

Why it works

The headline is spoken by the person who receives the gift rather than the one who buys it, which does the pester-power job in a single line and hands the buyer a ready-made decision instead of an argument. NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT AND NO PRESENT LIKE THE TIME is a chiasmus, a shape the ear remembers and repeats, and it carries the urgency and the product in the same breath. The price is welded into the product name, so the objection and the answer arrive together and there is nothing left to compare. The photographed child's open mouth gives the display type a source, so the headline is read as heard rather than as printed.

Steal this when

You are selling a low-priced gift and the buyer is not the user. Put the line in the user's mouth, build the price into the product name so the objection is pre-answered, and close with one unambiguous instruction for the moment of purchase.
