De Stijl advertisement page: Klassiek Barok Modern
The pattern
This still is filed under Price-anchoring offer.
Define
A higher reference number is shown first so the real price reads as a concession, not as a starting bid.
Mechanism
People judge a price against the first number they see. The anchor must be a real comparison or it collapses.
Verdict
We have a credible reference the buyer will accept
Why it works
The three title words are separated by word spaces far wider than the setting requires, so the typography performs the argument - three periods laid side by side, given equal weight, compared rather than narrated. The vertical bars at the outer edges frame the block on two sides only, which lets a short ad hold the width of a page without a box. Putting the reproduction count and the price on the same line, one flush left and one flush right, closes the value question in a single glance: what you get, what it costs.
Steal this when
Steal the split title when your subject is a comparison or a sequence and you want the layout to state the structure before the words do. Steal the count-and-price line whenever a concrete number of included items can be set opposite the price.
