The pattern

This still is filed under Price-anchoring offer.

Define

A higher reference number is shown first so the real price reads as a concession, not as a starting bid.

Mechanism

People judge a price against the first number they see. The anchor must be a real comparison or it collapses.

Verdict

We have a credible reference the buyer will accept

Why it works

The product is shown twice - once as an object in the reader's hands and once as a picture on that object's cover - so the poster identifies the magazine and demonstrates its use in the same image, and the loop makes the design act as recognisable packaging. The illustration sells a state rather than a feature set; nothing about the content is described, only the quality of the hour it produces, which is the correct move for an intangible whose actual contents change weekly. The contributor roster then supplies the reason to believe, in the cheapest possible form - names the buyer already respects, set as plain text. And the sequence is right: picture, then proof, then price, with the price in the only other red on the sheet so the eye finishes on the terms. The dense reserved border does two jobs, framing the scene like a window and giving the flat three-colour interior a hard edge so it does not drift.

Steal this when

Steal this for any subscription or membership where the product is text and the contents change every issue. Show one person in the exact state the subscription produces, list the names behind it underneath as your proof, and close with the price and the ordering route in a contrasting colour.
