Advertentie voor het tijdschrift Harper's New Monthly Magazine Les Maîtres de l'Affiche (serietitel op object), RP-P-2015-26-1514
The pattern
This still is filed under Price-anchoring offer.
Define
A higher reference number is shown first so the real price reads as a concession, not as a starting bid.
Mechanism
People judge a price against the first number they see. The anchor must be a real comparison or it collapses.
Verdict
We have a credible reference the buyer will accept
Why it works
The picture and the selling copy are kept in separate rooms and neither is asked to do the other's job. The Beefeater is pure recognition - a national silhouette anyone can name at fifty feet - and once it has stopped you, the cream panel runs an unbroken price argument in ordinary sentences. Cutting the figure out of the same red as the background removes every line that is not load-bearing, which is the move that made the Beggarstaffs' work legible at poster distance while chromolithographed rivals turned to mud. In the copy, the concession clause does the work: admitting the enormous sale and the great expense of production sets up STILL ONE SHILLING as a fact the advertiser is losing money on rather than a boast.
Steal this when
Use this split when the product needs both instant recognition and a real price argument. Give the image one unmistakable icon with no explanatory detail, then put the full reasoned offer in a quiet typographic panel beside it rather than shouting it over the picture.
