Square Deal Brand pet-food can label
The pattern
This still is filed under Pack as storefront.
Define
The pack is the store. On a shelf or a thumbnail, it must stop, name, and close without a clerk.
Mechanism
Shelf rhetoric. Hierarchy, claim, and proof live on the face. The first five centimeters do the campaign's job.
Verdict
The buy happens in a glance among competitors: grocery, pharmacy, app store icon.
Why it works
The two faces are aimed at two different moments: the courtroom face sells the name on the shelf and gets remembered, the realistic shepherd face sells the animal you actually own and is the one photographed for the trade. Between them sits the whole compliance apparatus in a single scalloped panel, which keeps guaranteed analysis and ingredients out of the sales artwork while still putting numbers on record - an early example of a can carrying its own proof block. The red-over-black split does the shelf work, giving outlined cream type the highest contrast available in three colours. VACUUM PACKED in quotation marks is the period tell: a process claim presented as a phrase to remember rather than a fact to verify.
Steal this when
Steal the two-face structure when one pack or one page has to win on a shelf and also survive a sceptical, informed read - put the memorable idea on one face and the literal product on the other. Steal the scalloped proof panel when regulatory or technical copy would otherwise contaminate your main artwork.
